Nowadays, office chairs come in a really wide range. The design of the chairs may vary greatly, and hence you may want to have a little different approach to adjusting the height of your office chair if you have replaced your old one.
That said, apparently, most office chairs may be divided into two types – the pneumatic office chairs and the non-pneumatic (usually the older models) office chairs. While the former usually comes with a lever or button right underneath the seat to adjust the height, the latter tends to come with a thick bolt covered with plastic.

So while adjusting a pneumatic chair, you may simply pull or push the button or lever to adjust the height. Similarly, if you have got an older non-pneumatic chair, you may have to turn the bolt in order to adjust the chair.
Adjusting your office chair’s height may be crucial, as not seating at a comfortable height may lead to many health issues, with back problems and pinched nerves being some of the most common ones. This is especially true if you are required to sit on a chair for extended periods of time for years.
How to go about adjusting the height of your office chair?
The below given is a step-by-step process of how you can go about adjusting your chair’s height the right way.
Make sure the chair is placed where you would usually sit
This helps you get a more accurate idea of whether you would be comfortable or not sitting at a particular height where you usually sit. This place may usually be your desk if you tend to work on a computer.
Learning about the buttons/bolts
You would obviously also need to get familiar with the controls that allow you to adjust the height of the chair. If you got a pneumatic office chair, you may want to try pulling or pushing the button or lever to get an idea about how it works.
Similarly, if you got an older non-pneumatic office chair, you would have to turn the bolt and find out how to adjust the height using it.
Some pneumatic chairs may have two buttons or levers, one for increasing the height and the other for decreasing it. The button/lever or bolt would usually be right underneath the seat of your chair.
Adjusting the height of your chair
Although you can actually adjust the height of your office chair while sitting on it, it isn’t really recommended to do so. It may cause wear on the chair sooner than later.
Hence, if you want the chair to last longer, you may want to take good care of it and not use it in a careless way.
That said, the ideal way to adjust your chair (if it’s pneumatic) would probably be to stand in front of it, press the button or lever (up or down, as needed), and adjust it to the height you want.
If the chair is non-pneumatic, you may simply want to turn the bolt and adjust it to the height you want and then lock it at that height.
Ensuring you’re comfortable with the locked position
After adjusting your chair to a height that you think you will be comfortable sitting at, you may want to sit on it and find out right away. After all, if you don’t feel as comfortable as you thought you would, you may re-adjust the height as many times as needed to ensure you’re comfortable sitting in the locked position.
However, also make sure you sit on the chair only after you have correctly locked the chair in your desired position. While some chairs may be locked in the position they are in as soon as you release the button or lever, some others may have a little different locking mechanism.
So whatever it is, it would probably be a good idea to make sure the chair is properly locked at the height you want before you sink in and try to get a feel of it.
