The Origins of the Challenge
The challenge to design an office chair without glue or staples was born out of a desire to reduce waste and promote sustainability in the design process. Govert Flint, a renowned designer, was tasked with creating a new office chair that would meet the European Commission’s sustainability standards. The project began with a simple yet profound question: how do you design an office chair without using any of the most common materials that contribute to waste, such as glue and staples?
The Design Process
Flint’s design process was centered around exploring alternative materials and methods. He began by researching and experimenting with various materials, including recycled plastics, bioplastics, and natural fibers. He also investigated innovative manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing and laser cutting, to create a chair that was both functional and sustainable.
The customer then assembles the chair by cutting out the parts using a laser cutter.
The SPRING Chair: A Revolutionary Design
The SPRING chair is a groundbreaking design that challenges traditional notions of furniture manufacturing.
The SPRING chair is produced as part of Better Factory, a program by the European Commission. Design studio Enrichers also worked alongside furniture manufacturer Antares Romania to develop strategies to look into how furniture manufacturers can make their portfolio’s ready for circular economy. Govert Flint completes the SPRING chair looking at how furniture design can be redefined for a circular economy its form resembles tessellated patterns and coils of spring the furniture object is born from two sheets of steel exhibited at this year’s Dutch Design Week an intricate form made from from a single material Flint collaborated with a kite surfer to explore if the sheets can be extruded using a kite
